With Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Nokia’s mobile division, we wonder what new innovations we might see in Lumia smartphones going forward. Nokia Lumia devices have been well praised for the image quality their cameras can produce, and with devices like the Lumia 1020, we know both companies are just scratching the surface. Still, to cross from smartphone camera quality to other categories, there are other experts in the matter, like Canon for example, and yes there are patents in between.
Microsoft has just announced that it has signed a patent deal with Canon. The specifics of this deal weren’t made public, but according to the statement, patents for digital imaging and mobile were included. According to Canon, this is a “natural extension” of the company’s long relationship with Microsoft, as we’ve also seen some collaboration in desktop services in the past.
It’s hard to predict if the results of this patent license deal will be seen in new Lumia smartphones this year, but with the amount of competition that Microsoft will face in the fall, it does have to move quick.
