Apple’s big break in re-inventing itself at the edge of bankruptcy more than a decade ago, had everything to do with music, through the iPod and iTunes. Still, we’ve seen how companies like Spotify are making a huge dent in Apple’s dominance over the music business recently. It’s clear that Apple needs to make some bold moves in differentiating iTunes from its competitors, and rumors have a plan in the works with iOS 8.
Even though it isn’t really official that Apple purchased Beats for $3.2 billion last week, Apple isn’t really the company that would make such a purchase public. Reports have it that the master plan behind the purchase of beats is the company’s plan to improve its music offering to support HD audio playback with the launch of iOS 8, and back this with its own line-up of accessories.
Rumors have it that Apple will bring support to HD audio playback through its lightning port, and that it will launch a new line-up of in-ear headphones, aside from other accessories that will all support its new HD Audio. The rumor also includes that iTunes music purchases will now support HD audio, and even HD audio streaming as part of the plan of features that we’ll see with iOS 8.
It’s hard to tell if this will be limited to new products, or if current ones that have a lightning port will support HD audio as well. Given the fact that we don’t expect Apple to launch new gadgets at WWDC in June along with iOS 8, it could be that we will all get lucky. Let’s just hope this does help Apple differentiate iTunes, though we think a drop in the price of new songs would help even more.
