Sony opens Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact US pre-orders

Mention “hot new tablet” to a mobile device enthusiast this week, and they’re likely to assume you’re talking about the Nexus 9 or one of Apple’s latest iPad models. But those are far from the only tablet to recently catch our eye, and today marks an important step froward towards retail availability ofone of the most notable tablets from last month’s IFA launches, as Sony kicks-off pre-orders for itsXperia Z3 Tablet Compact in the US.
We were hoping we might get some kind of news regarding US sales of the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact at the New York event Sony hosted earlier this month, but all we got was phone news (and even then, only for Verizon). But especially with tablets, you don’t need a carrier’s help to get your product off the ground, so Sony’s moving straight forward and offering the Z3TC for sale directly – well, for pre-order, at least.
You won’t have long that long to wait, though, with the tablet set to ship by November 2, under two weeks away. The 32GB WiFi-only version of the Z3TC will run you just a hair under $500.
That gives you a 6.4-mm-thick eight-inch 1920 x 1200 tablet, running a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 and packing 3GB of RAM. And this being Sony, of course the Z3TC’s waterproof. That may give the Nexus and iPad models a leg up in the resolution department, but the Z3TC has the advantage of being widescreen (and playing nicely with all your widescreen media). Does that mean that Sony’s more likely to get your tablet dollar? Let us know which of these new tablets you’re digging the most in the comments.
