Android 5.0 Lollipop is just about to graduate from its time as a developer preview release and get ready to take the spotlight as the latest public version of Google’s mobile OS. The Nexus 6 andNexus 9 will run Lollipop right out of the box, updates for existing Nexus models are sure to follow shortly, and other OEMs are already expressing their interest in bringing speedy 5.0 updates to their own families of handsets. So when is this new era of Lollipop going to get underway? Google has just shared the official start date for the consumer release of Android 5.0, but is it telling us anything new?
You may have seen a story going around this morning about a notice Google has just shared with its dev community, talking about testing Android 5.0 apps before they go live in the Play Store and mentioning a November 3 date for Lollipop’s public release.
Well, of course, right? After all, November 3 is the ship date for the Nexus 9, the first confirmed hardware with Android 5.0. As soon as those leave the warehouse, Android 5.0 is out in the open.
What this confirmation doesn’t necessarily mean is that Google intends to start distributing Android 5.0 updates to other Nexus models on November 3. Yes, we’ve seen a leak suggesting that at least the WiFi Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 could get Lollipop updates beginning November 3, but today’s news is not official confirmation of that intent. For that, we’ll just have to keep waiting.
