One of the latest “must-haves” for a full-featured mobile platform has become the need to offer users a one-stop-shop for their fitness needs. There’sApple’s Health in iOS 8 (and all ready to start taking advantage of the Apple Watch once it arrives early next year), but Android hasn’t been left without its own fitness hub, and we saw Google Fit debut at I/O this past summer. We had to wait for a few months, but now it’s finally time for Fit to hit prime time, and today Google’s making the Fit app available for Android users everywhere.
Don’t think that just because you don’t have Android 5.0 or don’t have a smartwatch that you can’t take advantage of Fit; far from it. Fit only requires Ice Cream Sandwich, and is ready to start collecting data directly from your phone’s own sensors – no wearable required, so long as you’re keeping your phone on your person for your workout.
If you do have extra wearable hardware, though, – be that smartwatch or fitness tracker – Fit’s eager to acquire that data too, using it to build an even more comprehensive view of your physical activity. And if you’re already using a popular fitness-tracking app, Fit can tap into that data, as well.
So go ahead and hit up Google’s source link to download Fit and get started keeping track of your activity. Well, if you’re at all interested in knowing just how active you are. If you’re more down with that whole sedentary kick, maybe sit this one out.
