AT&T getting budget-priced ASUS PadFone X mini later this month

Yesterday was a big day for Android, with the launch of Google’s latest Nexus hardware alongside Android 5.0 Lollipop. And in just a couple hours,we’re going to be neck-deep in iOS territory thanks to Apple’s iPad event. But before we get there we wanted to take a moment to check out some other Android news from yesterday that got a bit lost in the shuffle, as AT&T, ASUS, and Intel announced the PadFone X mini.
Just about one month ago we heard from one of our sources that AT&T was getting ready to welcome a new PadFone mini model, and this PadFone X mini appears to be that very same unit – details like the position of its rear camera (and the presence of a flash, unlike on the old four-inch PadFone mini) match nicely with the data that source provided.
The phone bit of the PadFone X mini is a 4.5-inch handset, though one with only a FWVGA resolution. It’s powered by an Intel Atom Z2560 SoC, has 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, and accepts microSD cards for expansion. There’s a 5MP rear camera, 2MP front-facer, and a 2060mAh battery within.
This being a PadFone model, we’ve also got a tablet dock to check out, this time with a seven-inch 1280 x 800 panel. It has its own 1MP front-facing camera, and adds an extra 2200mAh battery to power the larger display.
Those aren’t killer specs, sure, but it’s the price that might help sell this pair: AT&T will offer the PadFone X mini for just about $200, giving buyers essentially two devices for the price of one. That’s the outright price, too – no contract to worry about. Sales are set to begin next Friday, October 24.
