A Nexus 6 in two sizes would be a great idea

By now we’ve heard the rumors, we’ve seen the mockups, and we’ve oogled over the guy who madea “Nexus 6″ out of a block of wood just to show us its size. If all this holds true, the Nexus 6 (or whatever it will be called) is going to be big. Or is it?
The Nexus 5 wasn’t a small phone when it was released, but by today’s standards, it’s not overly large. We may be sitting on the edge of a screen size revolution and not even know it. Samsung’s Note family and the new iPhone 6 Plus help illustrate this point – both are undebatably in the phablet size.
One of the biggest complaints I’m hearing from potential buyers is that the Nexus 6 may be “too big” – at least based on the rumors. Though it looks like the bezels on the device will be very small, and Google will be able to put a much larger screen into a device that’s not significantly larger than other phablets on the market, people are still hesitant. That’s why a Nexus 6 in two sizes would be a great idea!

A Nexus 6 in two sizes

iphone-6So far we’ve had Nexus-branded smartphones. We’ve have Nexus-branded 10-inch tablets. We’ve had two very successful Nexus-branded 7-inch tablets. We’ve even got what I’d consider to be Nexus smartwatches (though not with the Nexus name). To date, however, We’ve never had a Nexus phablet – and it’s about time we did!
This is all speculation, but consider, if you will, the possibility that the device that we’ve been seeing is the very first Nexus phablet.  These types devices have a very established niche, and people who own phablets generally love them. They’re the best of both worlds: big enough to be a small tablet, and small enough to be a large phone. This could be the highly anticipated Nexus 6.
But what if Google was making a smartphone, too? Apple is taking this approach with the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. Both devices are larger than the previous generation, but one is obviously a phablet. Interestingly, if the mockups of the Nexus 6 that we’ve seen are accurate, the screen on the Nexus 6 will be larger than the iPhone 6 Plus, but the size will be very similar.
It’s also possible that Google has a “Nexus X” smartphone on deck and ready to be released alongside its “Nexus 6″ phablet. Releasing a “Nexus X” smartphone would potentially satisfy the naysayers that claim that a phablet is “too big”. Additionally, releasing a “Nexus 6″ phablet would address those who want a larger device, but don’t want to carry a smartphone and a tablet.

Where is this guy when you need him?
For the time being this is just wishful thinking and speculation based on rumors. We’ve heard both the “Nexus 6″ and “Nexus X” names tossed around by numerous sources. We’ve seen what Google’s competition and partners are doing in the phablet space. If Google wanted to sell a phablet, now would certainly be the right time to do it!

Your turn

We want to hear what you think. Do you think we might get a Nexus phabet and Nexus smartphone later this year? Do you think doing so would be a good idea. Which would you buy? Would you buy both? Head down to the comments and let us know!
