The Nexus S ended its run of officially-issued Android updates at 4.1.2. The Galaxy Nexus kept things moving up until 4.3. And now with the Android L preview arriving, owners of aging Nexus hardware are wondering what, if any support might still be in the pipeline for their own devices. The first-gen Nexus 7 is coming up on two years old at this point, and the Nexus 4 isn’t that far behind. Will they get to taste Android L when it goes public this fall? Just looking at the timing alone, you might be tempted to think not, but evidence is already arriving that suggests these models could still have some life in them yet.
It’s not a ton to go on, but Google has been spotted updating the binary driver packages for both the Nexus 4 and first-gen Nexus 7 – and this isn’t just for Android 4.4.4, either, with new files noticed on Google’s servers just last Friday.
Make a few inferences, and you can find yourself at the conclusion that Google is getting these guys ready for future updates – and specifically, Android L. Add to that reports of the Nexus 4 coming up in discussions of ART improvements (the kind we’re getting in Android L) at Google I/O, and we’ll admit it’s starting to sound like a convincing enough possibility.
Granted, there could be other reasons to update those binary drivers like that (so we may just be seeing what we want to see), but this would be fantastic news for Nexus fans if this theory pans out.
