One of the coolest features of Android Wear many people don’t realize is the fact that developers can build standalone apps for the platform — meaning, you can perform tasks without relying on a smartphone proxy. One of the apps demoed atGoogle’s I/O 2014 developer conference was Eat24, which allowed the presenter to order a pizza straight from his watch. While that app is still MIA as far as we can tell, two other apps have already become available that we’d like to shine the spotlight on.
The first app, a very unoriginal idea, is a minimalistic calculator app that can run directly on Wear. Called Wear Calc, it can be downloaded on any Wear-powered devices with a square display (currently only the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live… for the time being).
The second one is also yet another tried-and-true item — a compass. Named Wear Compass, it technically is a repetition of an app already on stock Wear devices. There’s not much a reason to download this one, but it’s worth noting its existence.
Both apps can technically be activated by voice, though you may run into an issue where “Wear” is detected as “Where” by Wear.
Both come from developer Marian Zorrilla, who looks to be fairly ahead of the game here. While these two apps are admittedly quite unoriginal, we’re excited to see where developers can take the platform once watches land on the wrists of the average consumer and Android Wear officially opens for business.
