Last month, Samsung brought us its updated Galaxy S5 LTE-A edition, fulfilling those long-standing rumors of a Galaxy S5 equipped with a quad HD display (among other improvements). Even with this model constrained to sales in South Korea, we’ve taken the time to get our hands on one, giving you a close-up look at the changes. But is this model’s release the conclusion of those quad HD Galaxy rumors? What about that chatter of a Samsung smartphone that was supposed to be a premium device from top to bottom, not only going with a 2K display but also a body made of metal – or at least with a metal frame? The so-called Galaxy F has continued to attract speculation, and a couple weeks back we took a look at what just might be an image of the hardware in the flesh. Now, a new report out of South Korea claims that the phone’s launch could be right around the corner, and that it may be finding a new name for itself in the process.
ETNews reports that “industry insiders” have informed it that Samsung’s metal handset will launch sometime next month as the company’s Galaxy Alpha. There’s no direct mention here of the Galaxy F name, but discussing the Alpha in the same breath as LG’s LTE Cat6 G3 and describing the phone as introducing a new lineup of devices, distinct from any Galaxy S or Galaxy Note series, sure aligns nicely with existing Galaxy F rumors.
Assuming this report is accurate, that means the Galaxy F/Alpha would debut well in advance of IFA 2014, where we’re already expecting the Galaxy Note 4 to make its first public appearance. Then again, maybe the Galaxy Alpha launch would get Samsung reconsidering its Note plans; until we hear the announcement itself, nothing’s set in stone.
