Apple is reportedly going to launch two different iPhone models this year, and even though we’ve called both devices the iPhone 6, we do know that there are significant differences between both of them. Earlier this year the rumors were that these devices would launch separately, but two credible reports recently have pointed to a launch date of both devices on September 19th. At this point it’s hard to confirm that, and with some new reports today of a later date, things have begun to get complicated.
A new source is claiming that both iPhone models will have a different name, just like we currently have with the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. Apparently the smaller 4.7-inch iPhone will be dubbed the iPhone 6, and in the case of the bigger 5.5-inch model, the product name will be iPhone Air. The report also mentions that the launch date will be on Thursday September 25th, with the announcement happening a week earlier, on Monday, September 15th.
Now, even though the dates seem logical, the iPhone names don’t depending on what product you compare them with. If you follow the MacBook trend, the Pro models are the bigger, more powerful models, and the Air models are the lightest ones. In the case of the iPad line-up, this is contradicting. It could be that Apple is following the iPad trend, though with the rumors of an iPad Pro in the works, it’s really hard to know which trend will be followed.
Whatever the case may be, the launch will most likely happen in September, and even if the names don’t follow a specific trend, two bigger iPhones are always better than what we have today.
