Smartwatches present some real challenges when it comes to user input, but despite the cramped quarters their screen dimensions afford, companies behind keyboard software have been pretty enthusiastic about coming up with usable solutions for these tiny displays. Minuum’s been especially vocal about smartwatches, and that makes a lot of sense, as its unusual linear keyboard is highly adaptable to non-standard screen layouts. Itshowed us its keyboard on the Galaxy Gear, teased how a round Minuum keyboard might look on the Moto 360, and now it’s back to squared-off displays, helping new Android Wear users install the software on their watches.
Since this whole keyboard-on-a-watch business can be a little tricky to get started with, users are invited to register for a mailing list that will connect them with detailed instructions on getting Minuum working with their specific smartwatch.
Even with Minuum installed, there are issues that still need to be faced: since Android Wear is so reliant on voice input and touch controls, many early apps don’t even present users with text entry boxes through which Minuum could be used; the company says that it’s working on improving that situation.
