If smartwatches really want to catch the public’s eye, they need to prove to us that they’re genuinely useful pieces of hardware worth adding to our lives: giving us something we didn’t have before. For some smartphone users, the convenience of wrist-borne notifications may very well be enough, while others of us are waiting to see what additional capabilities arrive. With Android Wear smartwatches now live, developers are already delivering updates for apps that bring new Wear components. Google’s getting in on that action itself, and today releases a new Camera app that lets Wear devices act as handy photo accessories.
When installed on a phone connected to an Android Wear smartwatch, the new Camera update will install a card on the watch offering users remote shutter control. You can set your phone somewhere, align the shot, and then run around front to get in on the action yourself before remotely triggering the shutter. Or maybe you’ll use the remote shutter to keep your shaky hands off your phone while taking a shot, helping to minimize distortion (who needs OIS now?).
Beyond the new Wear support, the update also tweaks the UI for shooting panoramic shots, as well as implements a new help system for when you run into trouble with the software.
