Rumors surfaced back near the start of June that suggested Google was looking to improve its streaming music offerings a tad, and had its eyes on adding streaming provider Songza to its stable. Songza had built a reputation for delivering curated playlists ranging from broad genre themes, to narrowly focused mood-based lists, and sources claimed that Google was interested in using this know-how to improve its own Play Music offerings. Earlier this afternoon, Google finally made things official, announcing its acquisition of Songza.
For the moment, don’t expect any big changes: Songza will continue to work just as it has so far – on iOS as well as Android. But Google’s going to start doing just what those rumors suggested, and take some of the best features of Songza and integrate them into Play Music – look for things like those expertly curated Songza playlists to arrive in the next few months.
There’s no mention of it here in Google’s announcement, but we can’t help but think aboutthat evidence of an All Access name change we shared with you this morning; could the addition of Songza’s resources mark the beginning of a broader Play Music rebranding? We didn’t pick up on anything like that during Google I/O, but maybe such news is destined to arrive alongside the public release of Android L this fall.
