Samsung’s got a new member of the Galaxy S5 family to show off today, as the manufacturer got around to announcing the GS5 mini. While we’ve been eagerly looking forward to that news, this hasn’t been the only GS5 model on our radar, and we’ve been catching signs here and there of other variants, like the GS5 Google Play edition. That one in particular has felt like it’s been right on the cusp of release for months now, even popping up in a Play Store thumbnail all the way back in April. SomeGPe stock issues last month had us hoping that a refresh with some new models (including the GS5) could be forthcoming, but so far that’s yet to happen. As we wait to learn the phone’s fate, a new GS5 Google Play edition render has emerged.
Well, official render or mock-up, we can’t say, but the image you see below sure looks the part for a Google Play edition GS5. “But it’s got on-screen Android buttons AND physical hardware buttons,” you protest. Granted, but in this case that makes this image seem all the more official – if you look closely at that GS5 GPe thumbnail that turned up on the Play store a couple months back, it depicted the very same arrangement.
Unfortunately, none of this puts us much closer to knowing when the Play edition Galaxy S5 will ultimately go up for sale, but we’re optimistic that it might be soon. The GPe GS4 didn’t go up for sale until late June last year, so we’re still in the right window for when we might expect its GS5 successor to similarly launch.
