Sundar Pichai Confirms android L preview at Google I/o

Android head Sundar Pichai has been talking to the press in advance of Google I/O, which officially gets started tomorrow, and we recently shared with yousome of his thoughts concerning Android, Apple, and their approaches to mobile devices. That lengthy Bloomberg interview touched on a lot more about Google, Android, and the I/O conference, and right at the end another tantalizing detail has managed to sneak out: an apparent confirmation of plans to announce the next major release of Android.
Bloomberg reports that Pichai intends to preview this release at Google I/O, even if it won’t be immediately available. He’s quoted as explaining the rationale for this early announcement as “I want the world to understand what we are doing sooner,” but it’s unclear if we’ll be waiting until fall before the update comes out, or if it might just be another month or two away.
And while Bloomberg takes some stabs at guessing what Google’s L-codeword might be, we don’t even get any firm answers about version numbering: 4.5, 5.0, or something different still. Regardless of just how this new Android release takes form, we’re happy to know that an announcement is just over the horizon.
