Microsoft is really trying to grow Windows Phone beyond the mainly-Nokia show the platform has become lately, and earlier this year we heard the company announce a boatload of new OEMs tapped to start producing WP hardware. More than just getting new companies involved, this effort also seeks to give Windows Phone a higher profile in developing markets, and a lot of this focus has been on Asia. We’ve been keeping an eye on what this means for India, like last month’s news from Obi Mobile, and today we check out another player, asMicromax launches its first two Windows Phone 8.1 models.
Micromax is introducing its Canvas Win W121 and W092. Both are dual-SIM models with 1GB of RAM and 8GB storage (expandable on the W121), and both run Snapdragon 200 SoCs. The W121 is a five-inch HD model (presumably 720p) with 8MP main camera and 2MP front-facer, as well as a 2000mAh battery. The W092, on the other hand, gets a smaller and lower-res four-inch WVGA screen, a 5MP main camera with VGA front-facer, and only a 1500mAh battery.
Sales of both phones begin next month, and the pricing looks very affordable: the W121 will sell for the equivalent of about $160, while the W092 will be more like $110. Hopefully, that will help balance out the lower-end SoC choice and some of these other more middling specs.
