We’ve caught wind of a rumored overhaul to iPad multitasking for iOS 8, but Apple has not yet delivered on this with the first beta. However, code has been found within it the release pointing to the feature. Developer Steven Troughton-Smith has hacked around with the iOS 8 simulator in the latest Xcode release, and managed to get a skeletal iPad split-screen multitasking working.
As you can see in the image above, Safari is only employing half of the screen of the iPad. The feature isn’t entirely completed yet, with other apps unable to take the empty half of the screen just yet, but it’s clear to see that something or another is on the way.
A two-finger swipe gesture, as demonstrated in the video below, is used to launch into the split-screen view. It’s not clear whether this gesture will end up in a possible final product, but it certainly seems plausible.
In addition a half-and-half split of the iPad screen, thirds also look to be supported. One app takes up two-thirds of the screen, while the other takes up the remaining space.
Seeing this feature in development does not at all necessarily mean that it will eventually launch officially. It’s entirely possible, though, that Apple has this up their sleeve for iOS 8.1, iOS 9, or maybe even a surprise announcement in iOS 8.
