A couple weeks back we brought you the latest update on the Blackphone from GeeksPhone and Silent Circle, a smartphone running the PrivatOS Android fork with a focus form the ground up on keeping the data on your handset private and secure. Following a strong pre-order response, we’ve been keeping an eye on when the first Blackphone shipments might start arriving, and earlier this month we got an update that they were still about three weeks out, seemingly placing us in the early days of July. Well, it looks like that’s not going to be the case after all, and today we hear that the initial June shipping estimate has been met, with the first pre-orders headed out now.
That’s great news for all those early Blackphone supporters, but what if you’re only just hearing about the phone now, and after all those privacy scandals in tech over the course of the past year, a privacy-focused smartphone is sounding pretty good? The Blackphone may be currently sold out, but we get word that new orders will open soon, with plans to start accepting them on July 14. We don’t have a sense for just what kind of stock might be available for this second wave, so act fast once the day arrives if you don’t want to be waiting around even longer.
The Blackphone has a 4.7-inch 720p display, runs a 2.0 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 4i, and has 16GB internal storage (with microSD expansion). Once orders re-open, the phone will run you just about $630, no contract required.
