Late last year we looked at reports that the Touch ID fingerprint scanner embedded in the iPhone 5S’s home button wasn’t always performing as well as users expected it to, and specifically its recognition rate appeared to get worse over time. Back in February we heard that Apple was on top of things and planning a software update to help resolve the problem. Then one week ago Apple released iOS 7.1.1, delivering just that Touch ID fix. But what really changed, in order to make performance so much better? While not an official explanation, one account attempts to detail just what’s going on here.
According to this source, iOS 7.1.1 does a few things differently. For one, it supposedly gathers more information when setting things up, so it starts off with a better idea of what your prints really look like. Then it also preemptively tries to anticipate errors that might pop up in future scans, so it can be ready to recognize them as valid nonetheless. Perhaps as a result of this error prediction, it also takes the phone less time to verify a scan now.
