The Samsung Galaxy S5 has been a good phone for many. It’s reached quite a level of popularity in the media thanks to all of its marketing attempts, and no, we’re not just referring to its continuous appearance at yesterday’s Billboard Music Awards. Still, Samsung has done a lot to match Apple’s Touch ID with it’s own special fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy S5, and even though it’s not perfect, Samsung wants to expand it.
Samsung’s senior vice president Rhee In-jong told analysts and investors at a forum in Hong Kong a lot of the plans that Samsung is envisioning with biometric technology. He clarifies that the company wants to expand the technology to as many mobile devices as possible, but also to even consider other types of technologies as well. In his statement he mentions that: “We’re looking at various types of biometric [mechanisms] and one of things that everybody is looking at is iris detection.” This technology will obviously be connected to Samsung’s Knox security initiative, which even though good, has also been considered a tad controversial in handling third-party apps.
Obviously it’ll be hard to tell how early we can expect this expansion to reach other types of biometric technology, or even lower-end phones, but it should be the way to go, as our society requires more security commitments from OEMs.
