Last week ended with a bombshell, as a rumor claimed that not only was the “Android Silver” project happening, but that its arrival would mean Google wouldn’t be selling a Nexus 6 smartphone this year. OK, but assuming that’s true, this Android Silver business sounded like it might offer a functional equivalent: a high-end Android handset with some stock, GPe-like software, even without that Nexus name. Would we still see some LG G3 variant arrive in this form, as had been rumored? Well, the idea that Android Silver might not arrive until February 2015 would make the G3 a senior citizen by that point; what about something fresher? Over the weekend, a rumor attempted to identify the hardware that would go into this handset, and it definitely sounds like an upgrade from the G3.
Supposedly, this Nexus-6-equivalent would indeed be made by LG, but would feature a Snapdragon 810 SoC. We’ve yet to see any devices running that chip, as it was only just announced last month. The 810 will be an octa-core 64-bit component, supporting Cat 6 LTE and featuring an Adreno 430 GPU. We’ve been expecting the first phones featuring the 810 to land in the first half of next year, so the timing, at least, makes sense.
Meanwhile, the G3 itself might only run a Snapdragon 801, despite rumors of an 805; we’ll find out for sure early next week.
