Like many smartphones, Sony’s Xperia Z2 does not support wireless charging out of the box. For proponents of the tech, that’s a big deal, as lowering the bar of entry for wireless charging is often mentioned as being of paramount importance to helping it really catch on. But at least Sony was ready to give users the next best thing, andannounced back in May its intention to release official Z2 accessories: a charging plate and wireless charging cover. Except now all of a sudden, near every trace of those products seems to have been wiped clear of Sony’s site, leaving us wondering if the manufacturer ever plans to release them.
This doesn’t seem to be a little isolated glitch: everything from the product pages for these accessories, to Sony’s blog post announcing them, and even videos on YouTube showing off the hardware have all been removed. There’s not even an announcement of a delay, but just an outright removal of most traces of these guys. We managed to dig up a couple support docs, as well product pages on regional Sony sites, but the vast majority of info is just straight-up gone.
We’ve tried reaching out to Sony for comment on this issue but so far have been unable to connect with anyone; if that changes in the days to come, we’ll be sure to update this post with any statement the company’s willing to make. It would be one thing to never give wireless charging a second thought, but going to the trouble of announcing accessories like this, only to forget about them later, is more than a little odd.
