A month and a half ago, Samsung announced its first commercial Tizen smartphone, the Samsung Z. The hardware seemed pretty capable, with a 4.8-inch 720p display and even the heart rate monitor from the Galaxy S5, but it didn’t take long before we started developing some concerns about the phone’s arrival, especially as Samsung withdrew the phone’s announcement from a planned event at a Russian Tizen dev conference, citing a need to beef-up its app portfolio. The manufacturer said the phone would be appearing “later,” and we were still in the promised Q3 availability window, but after all the delays so far, it was easy to worry about the Z’s fate. We still haven’t seen sales begin, but the phone did end up making a lower-key appearance at the dev summit after all, captured here on film.
It’s the same phone we saw in the official renders, but these hands-on pics give us some new appreciation of its build. For instance, we get to see the shiny finish along the handset’s edge, in contrast to the faux-leather-textured back. But really, this is mostly just whetting our appetite for the chance to put this model to the test ourselves.
Samsung’s got a lot of proving to do when it comes to Tizen, and that’s all going to start right here with the Z… well, once the phone actually hits store shelves, anyway. We’re all waiting on you, Samsung.
