Samsung’s already delivered an upgraded version of its Galaxy S5 flagship in the form of the GS5 LTE-A edition, a model so far constrained to South Korea that boosts the phone’s display up to a quad HD panel while also swapping in a Snapdragon 805 for a little performance kick and support for those titular LTE-A bands. Lately, though, we’ve been looking for LG to do something like that of its own – not with the quad HD update, sure, since the G3 is already sporting a crazy high-res screen, but with those same LTE-A and Snapdragon 805 upgrades. While that’s so far been driven by rumors, it’s finally looking like we can call that move confirmed.
At least, part of the story’s been confirmed, but that seems to be enough to infer the rest. LG is now accepting pre-orders in South Korea for a new G3 variant that supports LTE-A Cat 6. That Cat 6 bit is not something the Snapdragon 801 in the G3 as we know it can pull off, and the not too-hard-to-draw conclusion suggests that we’re looking at a Snapdragon 805 delivering those improvements.
Without the corresponding display upgrade (not that there’s an opportunity for one here), the idea of a G3 Prime was a little less compelling from the get-go, but we’re still glad to see the leaks and rumors surrounding it begin to get some confirmation. There’s no official word yet on any plans for availability outside South Korea, but comments from regional LG offices have implied that something might happen this fall.
