Don’t say we didn’t warn you, as we knew the Nokia X wouldn’t last long under Microsoft’s wing. We spent the last couple of years dreaming of a Nokia Android phone, but the thought of a low-end Nokia device running a forked version of Android was not the idea. Microsoft has sadly decided to kill the project after less than six months, but at least we’ve found some good news for those of you who believed.
Today we learn that the software updates that were exclusive to the Nokia X2 will reach the legacy Nokia X, Nokia X+, and Nokia XL. The updates are quite significant from a usability standpoint as the Nokia X2 included a smarter App Switcher, among other enhancements to the Nokia Store. Within this update Microsoft is also taking advantage of its opportunity to include services like Outlook.com, OneDrive, and OneNote.
It’s hard to predict if Microsoft’s plans to repurpose the Nokia X family will allow these existing devices to receive Windows Phone in the future, but this at least gives existing users a little fresh air.
