Trying to read into Google’s intentions from Play Store device listings can be a tricky game. Sometimes, it feels like stock availability problems foretell the release of new models, while other times we’re just looking at a logistical hiccup that resolves itself in due time. But with Google I/O just around the corner, a prime time for Google to mix things up with its hardware offerings, it’s understandable that we’re paying just a little closer attention than normal. And while some of that has focused on new Android Wear devices, right now we’re wondering what’s up with the Google Play edition series, as quite a few of them are no longer available.
By all appearances, Google sells six models of GPe hardware: the old HTC One and new One M8, the Galaxy S4, the Sony (Xperia) Z Ultra, the LG G Pad 8.3, and the Moto G. But as of right now – in the US, at least – a solid half of those options are marked as “out of inventory,” with only the Moto G, GS4, and M8 remaining.
Could this mean new models just over the horizon?That GS5 GPe we’ve been expecting? Maybe a Z2 from Sony? Or some fresh entries altogether? Like we said, it’s really hard to end up with solid answers from evidence like this, but the sheer bulk of it – the number of GPe models no longer available for sale – sure has us thinking that something’s about to happen.
