Samsung surprised us last night when it dropped an announcement for the long-rumored Galaxy S5 update with a quad HD 2560 x 1440 display and Snapdragon 805 SoC. Well, great, this sounds like the phone we’ve been talking about as the Galaxy F or GS5 Prime – maybe not the metal body so much, but the specs are a dead ringer for our expectations. So can we hope to see this model expand from initial availability in South Korea to also hit some other markets in Asia and Europe, just like the GS4 LTE-A edition did? Maybe even a little interest in the Americas? Don’t count on it, but that doesn’t mean your chances to see a GS5 like this are dead in the water.
The official word from Samsung, so far as this new LTE-A model is concerned, is “at this moment, there is no specific plan to provide the product to the global market.”
OK, but remember how we heard from CEO J.K. Shin himself back in March that there was “no such thing” as the rumored premium quad HD GS5? Sure, what we got last night wasn’t positioned as apremium GS5 so much as one with a new radio, but the point stands: Samsung tends to be very narrow with its language when denying/confirming these new versions. As such, maybe there really are no global plans for the LTE-A GS5, but there are plans for a Galaxy F or whatever other name Samsung intends to give the phone.
