The smartphone SoC race is starting to heat up in 2014, following last year’s lull punctuated by the failure of NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 to catch on in any meaningful way. But now not only is NVIDIA making a comeback, but other parties are getting involved, as well. For a while now we’ve been looking forward to LG’s first effort, but well over a year later, we’re still waiting. The G3 may have launched without Odin under the hood, but we could finally be getting ready for our first run-in with an Odin-powered phone, as a rumor attempts to identify where Odin will make its first appearance.
According to this source, Odin will arrive with LG’s model LG-F490L, identified by the codename Liger. OK, but just what the heck is that? Well, there’s more than a little uncertainty there. That phone’s previously been identified as running a Snapdragon 805, making it look like one of those updated versions of the G3 we’ve heard rumored.
But then again, it might also be the next-gen G Flex – and certainly, the Flex has been a platform for LG to show off its own tech, so that might be a great fit for the Odin chip. Other suggestions have included the Vu 4, a phone we hasn’t been particularly looking forward to, but using it to introduce a new chip might be a smart move by LG to get the phone increased attention. A lot of this mystery comes from us not really having a firm grasp on just how powerful an SoC Odin may end up being.
Really, though, there’s not a lot of strong evidence convincing us what Liger is one way or another. We’ll just have to keep looking for more info before we can really nail-down how Odin will premiere.
