Any bets on whether we’ll really see the LG G Watch make its commercial debut next week? The wearable has been official for months now, but we still haven’t had the chance to learn much about how it will go up for sale. Some recent Play Store glitches have made it look like Google might offer sales of the G Watch directly, and rumors have suggested that Google I/O attendees might leave with the smartwatch in their goodie bags. So while we’re likely to start seeing a whole lot more of the G Watch very soon, for now it’s still a treat when we get to check out new pics of the watch in the flesh. The latest to arrive, though, has us wondering a little about how the G Watch will get its power and interact with computers, showing a USB cable seemingly attached.
What’s the big deal with a USB cable? Isn’t that how we’d expect a smartwatch to get its power? Sure, but the G Watch doesn’t have a USB port. Instead, the watch features a series of metal contacts along its back, which we’ve been assuming would be used with some kind of dock in order to get that USB signal to the watch itself.
The fact that we can’t see any semblance of a dock from this top-down view suggests that we’re looking at a system similar to what’s used on Samsung’s Gear models, with a cradle-like attachment that clips-on to the watch from behind. While we haven’t seen any pics of that adapter just yet, its presence can be implied by this new image.
Beyond that hardware stuff, we also get a minor tease about Android Wear, or at least how it will interact with phones; don’t expect any Android system-level Wear support, because this sure seems to suggest that a separate Wear companion app will be arriving alongside the release of the G Watch and Moto 360.
