The fact that there was no hardware announced at WWDC 2014 makes Apple’s fall launches quite compelling. We were expecting the company to launch the iWatch and some revamp to the iPhone at the event, and at the moment all we have are progress reports. The latest rumors from China are in today, and it gives us a clear picture of what to expect for both the iWatch and the iPhone.
When it comes to the iWatch, rumors are slowly getting more detailed. This report mentioned a launch by Q3/2014, and that we should expect to see components and production from Largan, Foxconn, Pegatron, Quanta, Inventec and F-TPK. An interesting hurdle that Apple seems to be facing is with the OLED display that will be included in the device, as apparently there are some power draw issues that are being worked through. So far, the most interesting part though, is a price tag around $349, though Apple seems to keep things conservative with its production rates, which are just 10 million units initially.
When it comes to the iPhone 6, we should expect the 4.7-inch model to continue using Corning glass instead of sapphire, as there is apparently too little yield rate with the sapphire, and would only be economically feasible with the 5.5-inch model. The 4.7-inch model should be using displays from LG and Japan Display, and we should expect Apple to build 60 million units initially, though the sapphire issues on the 5.5-inch model will keep its supply short throughout 2014.
Obviously rumors will be rumors, but the source has gained some fame for reliability, so let’s see what we get.
