Last Tuesday, we picked up on the first whispers about Verizon XLTE, the carrier’s formal branding for its ongoing efforts to add LTE coverage in the AWS spectrum, beyond the 700MHz band it already used. All signs pointed to Verizon announcing the service today, and sure enough it’s done just that, explaining what XLTE is, where it will be available, and what phones will support it.
As we saw in those earlier leaks, XLTE is all about doubling the available bandwidth to Verizon subscribers by having phones take advantage of spectrum in both these 700MHz and AWS bands. Phones that are capable of it will be able to draw data from either band, and even users on older 700-only models should benefit as growing AWS usage takes some of the load off the 700MHz network.
XLTE service is switching-on nationwide, with markets announced in over 40 states. The entire list is a bit long, so if you want to see if you’re on there, check out the PDF we link to below.
We’ve known for a while now that Verizon has been getting its lineup of devices ready for AWS operation, and today’s announcement confirms XLTE support for a ton of recent smartphones. Those include the iPhone 5S and 5C, One M8 and Galaxy S5, the Moto X, and even Windows Phone and BlackBerry models. Again, for the full list, hit up the source link.
