One of the announcements a lot of us were expecting from Tuesday’s Microsoft event was of a smaller version of its Surface tablet, the Surface Mini. We actually saw a report just hours before the event claiming that we would not see a Surface Mini announced because of a fear of bad sales. We are now getting more insight into the reasons for why this tablet was possibly cancelled.
According to Neowin, the tablet was cancelled two or days before it was set to be revealed. Word is out that Microsoft may have a stash of 15 to 20 thousand of these tablets already manufactured, either to stay dormant for the rest of eternity or eventually to be announced by the company.
The same source notes that Microsoft may be waiting on Project Gemini — a touch-optimized version of Microsoft Office — to release the Surface Mini. This would make sense, as we will likely see the tablet marketed as a note-taking machine.
Finally, the launch timing is predicted as being this fall, which means those of you who are eagerly waiting to get your hands on a possible Surface Mini need not wait too long.
