An ASUS smartwatch has been long rumored. We first heard of such future possible product at the end of January, when the company’s Chairman, Jonney Shih, said that “there are actually many challenges in this area, and I don’t think products that lack special features will be useful. We’ll try to replace your watch by all means“.
We’re now seeing additional confirmation of plans for an ASUS smartwatch, from none other than the company’s CEO, Jerry Shen, who, on a recent earnings call, said, while talking about wearables: “in the third quarter, we will probably launch a product. This year we are only testing the waters a little bit.”
Watches powered by Android Wear will arrive later this year, as Google itself reassured everyone, while mentioning ASUS as a hardware partner, among others, for such wearables. However, chances are ASUS will not stop at a smartwatch (or products derived, like fitness bands). The company CEO also added that “in partnering with Google, we will launch some very good products, but we also have more ambitious goals“.
We will, of course, keep you up to date with all developments.
