Back at the start of the month, while participating in an AMA on Reddit, Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore dropped a tantalizing piece of news for Windows Phone users: along with the arrival of Windows Phone 8.1, users would finally be getting an official file manager. He provided the screenshots you see above, and while he seemed quite excited about sharing news of the tool’s forthcoming release, the details weren’t finalized; for instance, he was hopeful that we’d see a May release, but not 100% sure. Well, the month is rapidly winding down, so are we going to see this file manager arrive, or not? Today we get an update, and while it’s not all great news, we do get answers.
That possible May availability? Doesn’t look like it’s happening. This week, Microsoft finally marked the suggestion that Windows Phone get a file manager as completed, but noted that the software won’t be out until June. We were ready for this possibility, and June’s not too far away at all, but it still would have been nice to get this guy in May.
We also have a name for the new app, and it’s going to be short and sweet: Files. No File Manager, no File Explorer, just Files. Sure, this took longer than it should have to happen, but we’re just glad that it finally is. Keep your eye out for Files to come to the Windows Phone Store in just a few weeks.
