This week is turning out to be an unexpectedly significant one in the deployment of Windows Phone 8.1. And no, before you start getting too excited, we’re not talking about the start of OTA updates for existing Windows Phone 8 handsets – at least not yet. Instead, we’ve learned of the start of sales for the first hardware that ships with WP8.1 already installed. Now we can add to that the release of the platform’s first public software update, as Microsoft announces an update for the Windows Phone 8.1 Preview for Developers.
What’s new? Well, Microsoft’s official announcement doesn’t mention anything with more clarity than “several improvements based on the feedback we’ve received,” but Joe Belfiore gets a little more detailed on Twitter, talking about battery life improvements in specific. While that still doesn’t give us a ton of additional insight, we’ve heard a number of complaints about the 8.1 preview killing battery performance, so this is some very welcome news.
If you’re running the WP8.1 preview (and really, all the cool kids are), snagging today’s update is as easy as getting one when you’re on non-preview software: just head to your phone’s settings menu and proceed to check for available updates. Once installed, this one will bump your platform’s build up to 8.10.12382.878.
