One of the most frustrating things about smartphones for users who have grown up getting their hands dirty with computers is the extent to which many platforms try to keep users at arm’s length from the phone’s file system. Apps are all too often designed to save or open files without giving users a lot of heads-up about just where this data headed, and some of us crave a greater degree of insight into and control over the files on our phones. For ages now we’ve been talking about the possibility of Windows Phone getting an official file manager, but the 8.1 dev preview arrived without one present. Would Microsoft ever come through? Today we get some answers straight from Joe Belfiore himself, as he conducts an AMA on Reddit.
Belfiore confirms: a WP8.1 file manager is absolutely on the way. There’s no hard ETA just yet, but he says to be on the lookout for it to arrive sometime nearer the end of the month. But even if it gets pushed back to June, make no mistake that it’s coming.
In fact, Belfiore wasn’t just ready with an answer, but had a whole load of screenshots ready to share, anticipating that the question would be brought up. Suffice it to say, we’re hugely excited for this app to get here.
