For quite a while now, we’ve been hearing talk about Samsung returning to the idea of outfitting tablets with bright, colorful OLED displays. These are the panels that make the company’s flagship smartphones look as nice as they do, but for the overwhelming majority of its tablets, Samsung has been using LCD screens, instead. Rumors have slowly been circling around a pair of models thatmight bring OLED displays on tablets back to the forefront, and today we catch wind of a report that attempts to describe these tablets in a healthy amount of detail, as well as offers a name for this new family.
While we’ve had these SM-T700 and SM-T800 model numbers for a while, it’s only more recently that we started zeroing-in on screen sizes, with the pair now expected to offer very high res 2560 x 1600 panels at 8.4 inches and 10.5 inches, respectively. The two sizes, each available in both WiFi-only and LTE models, would form the basis for the new Galaxy Tab S series of tablets.
Samsung may go with Exynos 5 Octa SoCs for all these Tab S variants, including the unusual move to not bring in Snapdragon chips for the LTE versions. Look for the hardware to pack IR transceivers, as well as a Galaxy S5-style fingerprint scanner embedded in the tablet’s home button. The scanner may be tied to an enhanced multi-user interface for managing accounts.
We also hear about Samsung’s work on new flip covers, and a Tab S design that slims down on its bezels compared to the Tab 4 models. White and gray color options could be available, and look for that spotted GS5 back texture to return.
All this sounds pretty good, but we still feel like we have to point out the same caveat we do nearly every time we hear about these Samsung OLED tablet rumors: we’ve yet to see even a hint of evidence in support of the idea that these will be OLED-based, and not regular old LCD tablets. So far, we’ve had to take the idea solely on faith.
