Even though we’re probably months away from Apple unveiling its first wearable to the world, we still don’t have a final name for the product. We’ve seen Apple extend its product portfolio to also include wearables in its own trademark, and we’ve also seen it trademark “iWatch” through a dummy company in many countries lately, so iWatch is the most probable name to expect. Sadly if Apple decides to go through with that name, it seems there’s already a company that’s willing to defend the name as well.
Swatch has just announced that it’s requesting the trademark of the name iWatch in certain markets where it sells its already existing iSwatch. The iSwatch is definitely not a smartwatch, and even though Swatch has also made it clear that it’s not interested in building smarter wearables, it does feel that there are too many similarities between the name iWatch and iSwatch.
At this point it’s hard to tell how much this could affect Apple’s plans to launch its wearable under that same name, but knowing how Apple handles things, it could be that iWatch is just a bogus name as well.
