The iPhone 5C is Apple’s effort to get a current-gen (or very nearly, at least) smartphone into the hands of shoppers who might otherwise have their eyes on a discounted older model, and already we’ve seen efforts to lower the bar of entry even further: earlier this year, Apple introduced a new 8GB version of the 5C, priced to be even more affordable than the previous 16GB option. Apple fans in Europe and China have already had the chance to grab the 8GB 5C, and this week we learn of Apple’s plans to make the phone available to even more shoppers, with word that the 8GB 5C is coming to India next month.
Apple seems to have been trying to make up its mind what products to offer to Indian smartphone users, as evidenced earlier this year by the apparent discontinuation, and subsequent re-launch of the old iPhone 4. While the 5C would still be markedly more expensive than the iPhone 4, an 8GB model may still be cheap enough to spur sales while simultaneously increasing the average price Apple gets from those purchases.
With some estimates predicting that India will have more smartphone users than the US by the end of the year, this is one market we expect to see more and more manufacturers paying closer attention to. Unlike the US, Apple only has a tiny fraction of the Indian market, giving it plenty of room for growth.
