Smartphones can make it so easy for us to spend our money. As online services pick up on our tastes, they become more equipped to offer smartly tailored recommendations, and while we appreciate being informed about the hot new game or upcoming album from an artist we might like, that also means being presented with a lot of opportunities to shell out some cash. That’s what makes it so refreshing to see a smartphone doing something to help rein-in our spending, like we learn about today with Google Now’s tools for canceling subscriptions.
Recurring subscriptions can be deceptively difficult to quit, especially if you’re not keeping on top of them: you meant to cancel it this month, but the payment already went through, so you might as well keep using it for the time being… until you forget to cancel again.
As it turns out, Google Now has some built-in functionality to help you get out of such arrangements. You can ask Now to cancel your subscription, and while it won’t do it automatically, it is tied-in enough with a number of services (Spotfiy, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and others) to offer you direct links to cancellation pages. And if you’re not ready to end things just yet, you can always set a reminder to put cancellation through at a future time.
